When the ER Watches the Gold Medal Hockey Game
Working 14 hours sucks mighty hard, especially after 3 day shifts. But what a shift it was, especially when the Canada vs. US game was on. When the US scored 20 seconds before the game was supposed to end, monitors started to show skipped beats. The atmosphere transformed from one of the joy to absolute devastation. That is until Canada scored the winning goal in overtime! The entire department – doctors, nurses, paramedics, patients, security, house-keeping staff and police officers erupted into screaming cheers and broke out singing O Canada. Even Dr. Crusty was all smiles. What a game – it was enough to lift me out of my sleep deprived foul mood for the rest of the shift!

"Sir, you're gonna have to wait a few minutes before developing asystole. All the nurses and docs are watching the game, so unless you wanna code yourself..."
probably hard to get a decent strip during the sudden death overtime....great game and congrats on the win.
BOO-S-A!! lol, GOOOOO CANADA!!!
I was out on Robson street celebrating... What an electric atmosphere - all the cheering, car honks, high fives everywhere. We definately earned this win. Well done Canada!
(As a small aside, we also broke the world record for the most gold medals won by a single country at a Games. We won 14, one more than Norway in 2002)
It was a great game because both teams were at equal strenght. The last 30 seconds of regulation time were my favorite. Congratulations on your win.

I love those moments!
Reminds me off those Stanley Cup nights in ER.
Awww...I miss Canada. :(
Glad you got to have a more pleasant shift.
Curse you, Sidney Crosby! Congrats on the win. Our US team put up a good fight, but the better team won. I felt bad for the US goalie -- he was amazing.
LOL! It was just the opposite reaction in my ED in the US. We had to deal with the depression and resulting chest pains! What a great game!
We were really sorry to have lost the game, but happy that "our" Sid the Kid scored the winning goal (we are in the Pittsburgh area, and Sid lives in our town).
At least Canada beat us! If we had won there might have been a replay of the Southpark movie!
That is really funny! When I was at the penitentiary - leaving, signing out after teaching my Cr. Wr. class, all the guards were in the office watching the Wed. game with baited breath! No escapees that night!

Hello,
My name is Richard Hemby and I am administrator of an online education site called www.dnpprograms.org – a great resource for those seeking doctorate programs in nursing. Apart from the main feature of this site, we also maintain a blog site that talks about the interesting and always evolving work of nurses. It aims to promote understanding among registered nurses and the direct community it interacts with. It’s a fun-filled place packed with information about this noble profession.
Remember that 25 Random Things About Me fad that went viral on Facebook? Well, we have created our own version, sort of. We recently posted an article entitled 25 Things You May Not Know About What Nurses Know. It’s an interesting read that puts nurses in a new light, like having to juggle the roles of being a CEO, customer service manager, crisis coordinator and medical professional all rolled in one. Intrigued? Here is the link to the article:

We would like to know if you can do us the favor of putting this article on your site. I think that your readers will definitely agree and may even be surprised with the information they can gather from this. Should you have any question, feel free to me email me at Richard.hemby24@gmail.com.
Hope to hear from you soon.
Thanks,

Hahahah I know it's wayyy late but I was just reading through your old posts and your ER sounds like the mirror image of my department that night. I'm in the US, and half our staff was either standing in the resus bay or craning their necks from the nurses' station to see the game on two tiny patient TV's for the last minute of regulation, and were jumping for joy when the US tied it. Unfortunately we had to go back to sick people and were more scattered when Canada got the win, but that's definitely gonna be one of my favorite work memories for a while.
ohh yes I think there were similar scenes across Canada and the USA. What an amazing game!!! Go Canada!!!
Really effective information, much thanks for the article.
nice site
