Un-effin-believable

EMS brought a patient over to triage who called and demanded that he be taken to the hospital to get her H1N1 shot. She was livid that we did not have it. Furious does not even begin to describe how I felt towards her. Similarly, I don't have a sufficient vocabulary to express the amount of loathing I felt towards her for tying up an ambulance for an hour.

I say, give her a swift kick in the butt and tell her to get out of your ER! I had a 5 year old give me major attitude today! I admitted her, gave some scrubs to mom so the kid could wear them as pyjamas, and the kid starts going into hysterics: "Um, DUH! How do you expect me to put that shirt on when I'm hooked up to stuff? Geez, you're STOOPID!"

I tried so hard not to laugh. She was so serious about it too.

My question is why did EMS even transport him to a hospital under those circumstances?

Most EMS have the policy, "You call. We haul." Out of fear for being sued if patients dies of H1N1 later and lawyer blames ambulance service for not transporting.

Yeah I know: WTF?

This might be a second cousin to your story..old old man with end stage everything whose wife is trotting him off to be first in line for the H1N1 vaccine...uhh, limited vaccine means go to the back of the line.
Kinda too bad you couldn't have vaccinated...just like IV's, there's quite a delicious selection of uber long long needles for injections. :)

I really really hope you guys signed the blue sheet to charge her the full cost of the ambulance.

NOT that it will do much good, but at least it's satisfying.

If it makes you feel better, I once had a patient who came by EMS with a broken fingernail.

And it was a FAKE nail.

A broken fake nail! Now that's funny!
